How to have a ‘Hack’ of a good HIMSS

So, unless you live under a rock or just aren’t into the whole Healthcare IT thing, you know HIMSS16 is less than a week away and it’s promising to be bigger, better and busier than ever.

Let's face it, HIMSS16 is going to be hard to handle and you have to concede now – You cannot see everything HIMSS has to offer… or can you?

If you're like me, the notification sounds, vibrations, and blinking lights from your mobile device, computer and tablet is controlled mayhem to ensure you're on schedule, socially up-to-date, and on your toes.

But without a plan, "controlled mayhem" prompts, reminders, and attention-getters don't stand a chance against the #HIMSSanity. And before you know it, you'll have spent way too much time trying to figure out where you are, where you're supposed to be (or have been), or what you've already missed!

Let me cut to the chase – here are 5 hacks to help you get the most out of your HIMSS experience.

  • 1. Visit the HIMSS16 Conference website.
There's more than a thousand exhibitors, hundreds of education sessions and expert panels, and a handful of featured keynote addresses.
  • 2. Plan your customized agenda.
An easy-to-use tool to save time, manage your logistics and plan your agenda your way.
  • 3. Download the NextGen Healthcare HIMSS16 Insider's Guide.
Yes, self-serving, but this guide offers a little NextGen Healthcare, a little peer learning, and a lot of FUN for your time in the desert.
  • 4. Share on Social Media – (surprised I even mentioned it I know).
The usual suspects being Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Google+ and even Pinterest. If you're looking to get the most-up-to-date, breaking news, announcements, bits and bytes from sessions, events and activity on the show floor, Twitter is your platform. The official hashtag guide and the HIMSS16 Social Media Ambassador Twitter list can help you not only navigate the Twittersphere, but also hone in on what interests you most!
  • 5. Meet 'em online… and in the flesh!
For people who (like me) enjoy doing the "social thing" both online and in person, there are opportunities to connect, convene and engage with the Health IT Social Media (#HITsm) Community at the HIMSS Spot.

As mentioned in previous HIMSS posts, there are times where the most interesting, valuable and educational moments are not spent in the sessions themselves – rather in great conversations; both online and in person.

Adding to the #HIMSSanity, I'll be attending events, posting important news, live updates, and photos on all social media channels throughout the event! So be sure to follow me and @NextGen on Twitter. And we want to hear from you, too! So whether you Tweet it, Like it, Post it or Pin it, the key is to actually experience it, enjoy it and be sure to share your it!

I'm notorious for giving shout outs to my "must-follow" Tweeps so here's a few you should add to your list as well: @BlueHenLovett, @SarahCorley, and @ChrisEmper for more HIMSS social news!

And lastly, if you want to talk Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, you name it, I'd love to connect! I'll be at the NextGen Healthcare booth, #4421. You can always track me down on Twitter @ChelleRovner or connect with me on LinkedIn.

PS – Not a hack but a piece of advice… wear comfortable shoes. I love a good pair of heels, but sometimes you have to sacrifice style for comfort. (The jury is still out for me on this year's shoe selection).

What did I miss? Have any tips or tricks you've picked up from previous HIMSS conferences?
