While most physicians correctly diagnosis and treat the vast majority of cases they see, there are times when clinical decision support can provide valuable input – when  common conditions have atypical presentations, for instance, or when patients present with several different clinical features.

NextGen EMR includes a clinical reference system that provides evidence-based guidance to help providers make more informed decisions at the point of care. Authoritative diagnosis and treatment guidelines for more than 300 diseases are provided through the system’s integration with the American College of Physicians’ Physician Information and Education Resource (ACP PIER). When patient problems or complaints are identified in the system, users are linked directly to the ACP PIER content and guidelines for decision support information.

NextGen EMR also incorporates the Isabel diagnosis support software, a diagnosis reminder system that suggests a checklist of likely diagnoses based on the clinical features you enter.

NextGen’s diagnosis decision support systems allow physicians to search a large number of resources for patterns of diseases in a split second. Fully integrated with the EMR, these systems are easy to use and able to handle unstructured text (i.e., terminology commonly used by physicians in handwritten case notes). With one click of the mouse, the physician can also be given a differential diagnosis and an instant link to additional information (such as diagnosis-specific investigations, treatments, journal abstracts relating lessons learned from others’ errors, and recent advances).
